SIMIAN RIDGE is undertaking to produce a series of fins steel string guitars with backs and sides made of New Zealand Woods.

So far (August 2016), jigs moulds, and prototype guitars made from Honduras Mahogany are in process. The objective is to test the use of New Zealand Kauri as neck block, kerfing, bridges and necks, and to develop a new hybrid X bracing pattern that incorporates the entire soundboard as a resonating surface.

A stock of Kowhai and Black Maire is aimed at making backs and sides of these superb New Zealand woods. The use if these woods in guitar making ia largely untested. Theya re difficult to find in the right size and grain configuration for guitar making.

The two prototypes produced to date are both excellent sounding guitars. Another prortype is due for completion in January 2018, this one made from New Zealand Black Marire. Black Maire is very similar to brazilian rosewood. This guitar shold be very interesting.

Here are just a few photos that show this process. Plenty more will come.
